Welcome to my Viking journey. This is where you will learn about my adventures. I have explored the Viking world. Join me as I share my experiences.

There’s nothing quite like setting sail on a river cruise to explore the heart of Europe. My recent Viking river cruise took me on a mesmerizing voyage through the timeless beauty and rich history of the Netherlands, Germany, France, and Switzerland. Whether you’re a cultural explorer, a river cruise enthusiast, or a history buff, this trip has something to offer everyone.

Understanding the Vikings

The Vikings were brave explorers. They lived over 1,000 years ago. They came from Scandinavia. This includes present-day Norway, Sweden, and Denmark.

Who Were The Vikings?

The Vikings were known as warriors. They were also traders and farmers. They traveled by sea in longships. These ships were fast and strong.

The Vikings were seafaring people from Scandinavia, primarily modern-day Norway, Sweden, and Denmark, who lived during the Viking Age (roughly 793–1066 AD). Known for their skills in warfare, they also excelled as traders, explorers, and farmers. Their society was built around a culture that valued adventure, exploration, and resilience. Vikings used iconic longships—sleek, fast vessels with shallow drafts—perfect for raiding, trading, and exploration. These ships allowed them to travel great distances, reaching as far as North America, the Middle East, and Russia.

Though often remembered for their raids on European coasts, the Vikings also established trade routes and settled in many regions, influencing the cultures they encountered.

Viking Culture

Viking culture was deeply spiritual and rich in storytelling. They practiced Norse mythology, which included a pantheon of gods with complex personalities and powers. Odin, the all-seeing god of wisdom and war; Thor, the powerful god of thunder who wielded a mighty hammer; and Loki, the trickster known for his cunning, were among the most famous gods they revered.

The Vikings passed down their beliefs and heroic tales through oral stories called sagas. These sagas, later recorded in Iceland, featured epic tales of gods, mythical creatures, and legendary heroes. They provided moral lessons, celebrated bravery, and captured the values and struggles of Viking life, helping to preserve their legacy through generations.

Viking Homes

Viking homes, known as longhouses, were essential for family and community life. Built from wood, turf, or stone, these structures were long and narrow, with a single large room where families and animals lived together. Inside, the central hearth provided warmth and light, making the space cozy and functional for the harsh northern climate.

The interior of a longhouse had benches along the walls, used for seating, sleeping, and storage. Despite the simple construction, Viking homes were practical, and the shared space helped strengthen family bonds and community resilience. This style of communal living was a defining aspect of Viking life, where work, rest, and meals all took place together.
